I remember some years ago that I didn't like some of the changes from one of the updates, so I had been running my original version from the DVD for years (I disabled updates).
CHESSBASE READER WITHOUT ANNOYING POPUPS UPDATE
You're right that it was probably something with a Windows Update and not Chessbase related directly, though I'm using Windows 8 on my laptop.Īs I said, the fix I found online (I didn't bother contacting Chessbase) was downloading and running Chessbase 10 Service Pack 6. Papageno, the lost Move Up/Move Down buttons drove me insane. Has anyone else encountered this problem with CB10 (ChessBase 10) ?

This occurred on two machines, a Windows 7 Home Premium (32 bit) PC and a Windows Ultimate (32 bit) PC. Upon reinstalling SP6 (which appears to me to be the very last one ChessBase released for CB10, in December 2011), the program crashes when restoring a layout from a. I experimented a bit, and found that if I reinstalled SP5 (dated July of 2010), the window layout save/restore works just fine. cblay file, then tries to reset the window arrangement using it, CB10 crashes, necessitating a restart of CB10. I also added the link to a Wikipedia entry for "ChessBase" recently, as it seems difficult to find.įYI, I discovered a bug with ChessBase 10 that seems pretty consistent: if one saves a window layout to a. I don't remember where I downloaded the file, but there was a download link from one of Chessbase's forums, I believe. I seem to detect a slightly faster startup time with CB11, though compared to CB10, it is still much slower to start. As I don't normally use them immediately upon startup (and assume they will be loaded when needed), I unchecked that option. If anyone knows of a 'fix' to this minor annoyance, I'd appreciate your posting it here (other than unchecking 'Large Buttons' and re-checking it, with every starup!).įinally, one tip for speedier startup of CB11: In the Options menu, on one of the tabs dealing with Tablebases, there is an option to load them at startup. This bug must have been introduced with one of the service packs, and was never corrected. I reapplied SP6 ('December 19 2011') after the reinstall, and noticed that, unlike with the original install, the first window always opens with the tiny menu icons, though the option for 'Large Buttons' is checked. If that scenario did not produce the desired effect, then I should have tried a 'thorough' uninstall with Revo, and a second reinstall, and testing.) (In hindsight, a better way would have been to do a "normal" uninstall followed by a reinstall and testing. Therefore, I can't report whether a "normal" uninstall of CB10, followed by a reinstall, would have produced the same result. I used Revo Uninstaller, which can do a thorough scan of the registry and files to allow a more thorough uninstall, so the uninstall was more complicated (as I did not want to uninstall anything connected with CB11, which I also have installed).

John Emms told me this was happening with CB11 as well.įYI, I just deinstalled and reinstalled CB10, and so far it is working without the annoying "The serial number is not valid" warning and shutdown. ChessBase 10 is starting to shut down some of its functions, access to the online database being cited.
